Selective Abortion

The majority of abortions are the result of an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy creating a crisis for the mother. These would include anything from teenage pregnancy, already having too many children to care for, and women who feel they are too old to have a baby.

Therapeutic abortions are performed primarily out of concern for health issues that would make it dangerous for a woman to carry a baby.

Selective abortions represent the smallest percentage of abortions performed in the United States. Gender Selection abortions may be performed when parents want a child of a particular gender. Many Asian and Third World countries encourage this for cultural and economic reasons. In the U.S., however, many states are disallowing abortions for reason of gender selection.

Pre natal testing for Down Syndrome has been available for decades. With advances in technology, many congenital illnesses and deformities can be diagnosed at an early stage of pregnancy. In addition to Down Syndrome, identifiable congenital conditions include Cystic Fibrosis, club foot, cleft palate, spina bifida, and heart defects. Parents may elect to selectively abort babies that will have lifelong disabilities

The technology of IVF (in vitro fertilization) has helped countless women conceive children they desperately want. However, the nature of the procedure can involve fertilizing dozens of eggs and implanting up to a dozen or more of these, in the hope that one or two will survive. On those occasions when too many fetuses survive the implantation, there is good reason to elect to have some of them removed. Multiple baby pregnancies present problems such as health risks to the mother and premature births with the associated likeliness of low birth weight, underdeveloped lungs, and developmental disabilities.

In many cultures, girls are aborted or allowed to die in the belief that girls are less valuable than boys. Someday, those boys will go searching for wives – and, thanks to selective gender abortion, there won’t be enough girls to go around.

Planned Parenthood

If you listen to some people, Planned Parenthood is an organization devoted to nothing but abortions. In reality, Planned Parenthood has a long history of free or low cost medical care of all kinds. In many neighborhoods, it is the only affordable health care available.

Margaret Sanger established the first American birth control clinic in Brooklyn, New York, in 1916. By 1921, she formed the American Birth Control League and that became the Planned Parenthood Federation in 1942. anger believed her own mother had died early because of the detrimental effects of many pregnancies. She wanted to help women control and space the births of their children by using birth control methods like diaphragms and condoms.  Distribution of contraceptives was illegal in the United States at the time, as was the distribution of any birth control information. Sanger and her supporters were often arrested. As the laws were gradually relaxed, Sanger was able to provide information to more women.

Planned Parenthood offers many services that may be available at local clinics. They include birth control, emergency contraception, sex education, and pregnancy testing. Planned Parenthood can also offer sports physical exams, screenings for prostate, cervical and breast cancer, as well as tubal ligation, vasectomies and abortions. Planned Parenthood treats sexually transmitted diseases, monitors high blood pressure, and screens men and women for common diseases like diabetes and thyroid conditions.

In 2008, surgical abortions constituted 3% of all Planned Parenthood services. Cancer screenings are 17% and contraception makes up 34%. As the leading advocate of reproductive rights, Planned Parenthood has been involved in several major court cases, including Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which established current abortion law.

Because medical fees are on a sliding scale based on the individual’s income, it is often the first place students and the working poor go for medical treatment.

Children as Emperors

Think of a world with no brothers, no sisters, no cousins, no aunts, and no uncles. That is the world of each child born into the Chinese One Child per Family Policy, established in 1979. The policy, designed to stop China’s rapid population growth, has included heavy fines, forced abortions, and sterilization for families who wanted more children

These only children don’t just think they are the center of the universe; they are – at least to their parents and grandparents. Their health, education, safety, and happiness are of primary concern to the adults around them. Is it any wonder they are criticized and called “little emperors” by the state run press? These Little Emperors are usually found in urban areas. The one child policy is not as strictly enforced in the country where more than one child’s labor is needed to make a farm successful.

Chinese parents, concentrating their parenting skills on one child, go to great lengths to make sure their child has every educational advantage. There are even reports of mother’s sitting next to their children in class, acting as teacher’s aide and disciplinarian. Homework time for older children becomes all-important. The house is silent, the best conditions devoted to the student. The children are also given every opportunity to be a success – music lessons, art lessons, and extra English language lessons.

The stereotype of these children is strong willed, spoiled and self-centered. The press regularly runs cautionary tales of children who commit suicide when they are denied candy or are disciplined. There are dire warnings of spoiling children with expensive clothing and too many toys. However, recent studies have shown them to be independent, verbal, and excelling academically.

The one child policy has changed life for individual families, but it has changed society, too. The idea of filial piety, the Chinese traditional ideal of revering and taking care of elders has been turned upside down.

Sex Ed

She’s every Daddy’s pride and joy. Fourteen years old, beautiful, an accomplished pianist, straight-A student, and sexually active. What? Most parents of seventh graders do not know that the average age of first sexual contact for U.S. Students is 14 years of age.

Given this statistic, how is “Abstinence Only” Education working? For several years, Congress has been willing to fund abstinence only education over comprehensive sex education, although abstinence only is not supported by scientific studies to be effective. Studies have shown comprehensive sex education, sometimes called abstinence plus, which stresses protection from HIV, sexually transmitted disease (stds), and unwanted pregnancy, to be more effective.

Proponents of abstinence only argue that giving students information about birth control and safe sex is really giving them permission to start sexual activity. Comprehensive sex educators argue that peer pressure, social standards, and nature itself have a great influence on teenage activity and it is better to have an informed teen.

Both camps argue that the best sex education should come from the home, but that is not always the case. The days of parents having “the big talk” with their child before the wedding are apparently over. Studies have shown parents often overestimate their child’s lack of interest and underestimate their need for accurate sexual knowledge.

Another approach is the encouragement of “virginity pledges” and promise rings hoping young men and women will wait until marriage for sex. Studies show that young people who take the pledge and then have sex are much less likely to use any form of birth control.

Neither approach convinces teenagers not to have sex. Unprotected sex is a major health concern for young people and the families who love them. Over 10,000 new HIV infections in people under 21 are reported each year. And sexually transmitted disease can cause long term medical problems including sterility in women.

China’s One Child Policy

China’s one child per family policy has been very successful. So successful that 24 million young men may never marry because of a shortage of eligible young women.

The one-child policy was written into the Chinese constitution in 1978. It was designed to stem an overpopulation boom that threatened destroy the country’s natural resources and economy. The policy, enforced by fines, abortion, and forced sterilization, has resulted in a lopsided birthrate of 115 males to 100 females. Normally, 105 males are born for every 100 females.

The number of girls has been further distorted by discarding female babies by neglect, abandonment, selective abortions, and infanticide. Traditionally, a son was desired because he and his family would care for his parents and carry on the family name. This is still an important family role in rural areas, and the government does make some exceptions to the one child limit for farmers and ethnic minorities.

Another social impact caused by the one child policy is the looming age imbalance of the Chinese Nation. Because of the low birth rate, there are too few younger workers to provide for the aging population. There are reports that the government is considering expanding the population policy to two children per family, to reverse the population loss.

When polled, most mothers (70%) suggested they would opt for two children. Others said they were satisfied with one child and did not have the time or the energy for more. The single children, without siblings and sharing, are often called “little emperors” and are called spoiled by their critics.

Wealthy urban families can take advantage of a loophole now. Children born in foreign countries are not counted under the policy, if they do not become Chinese citizens. Specialized travel agents now book flights to the United States where Chinese women can give birth to babies who will be U.S. Citizens.

E Cigarettes Can Be Safer for Pregnancy

Most people who are pregnant know that smoking while pregnant is not a good idea. When you are pregnant, you are not only making decisions that affect your own health, but they also affect your baby. This is why it is such a big deal for many people to quit smoking either before they get pregnant, or once they have found out they were pregnant. For many people, the thought of quitting is so stressful, though, that they go out and have another cigarette after thinking about it for a bit.

There are other options out there. Some are able to quit cold turkey, especially after finding out that they are pregnant. Others are not. There is controversy about the options that you have, though. For example, many people say that going on the patch, pill, or gum to quit smoking is safer for the baby than smoking itself. Others claim that there is not nearly enough known about these to make that claim. It is an option, though, and keeps you from actually inhaling the smoke.

Another option is to look into an e cigarette. These are much safer in general than smoking a regular cigarette. They do not have many of the harmful chemicals that are in regular cigarettes. Instead, they are electronic devices that have cartridges of nicotine and water. Though they taste and feel like a regular cigarette, they are healthier, and do not have the problems with second hand smoke. This is not to say that they are safe for pregnancy, but they are an option to help you cut back slowly.

Pregnancy can be stressful. Quitting smoking is also stressful. When you combine the two, you may find that for you, you need some help with quitting. If this is the case, look into your options, and talk to your doctor about them.

Preventive Health Care Saves Lives

Half of the deaths caused by heart disease give little or no opportunity for treatment because the events come on unexpectedly and sudden. If an individual has a family history of heart disease or if he or she is in any other way at risk of heart disease, preventive health care has to be the watch word of their life.

Insurance companies are now realizing the value, the monetary value of writing in preventive health care as a covered service, many times covered 100%. The old time quip says, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It is an old saying but right, then and now as we are in a time of rising costs of going to the doctor and having surgeries, etc. Taking a regime of Vitamin C to boost your immune system is cheaper than coming down with a head cold, flu, etc, and paying for a doctor’s visit and a prescription of antibiotic.

Today, death rates from cardiovascular disease as well as many other diseases have declined because people have made lifestyle changes and positive behavior.

Most of the heart disease treatments are not cures. They are medications that help an individual to maintain some quality of life. Invasive procedures used to treat heart disease do not slow the buildup of fatty deposits in arteries. Atherosclerosis is what causes most heart disease. Atherosclerosis may begin in childhood but clinical disease will not show up for decades. Research has shown various strategies to reduce the risk of heart disease which can change the negative percentage numbers.

Most strategies have to do with eating habits and moving more or exercise with creating a lifestyle of activity.

Probably one of the most important areas of preventive health care for women is mammograms. At least by age 40, women should have a mammogram annually as well as doing self exams at least weekly. The ultimate goal of mammography for women whether they are at risk or not, is the early detection of breast cancer. Mammography will also detect of characteristic masses or microcalcifications along with small lumps.

The First Day and After

Pregnancy for any woman can be a scary event. Until very recently, a woman had a very high likelihood of dying in child birth. While these days the physical dangers are slightly less, it doesn’t matter whether a young woman hails from upscale Denver apartments, or the darkest ghettos of a country where the language has no word for “medical care.” Being pregnant can still strike fear even into a normally very resolute woman, especially when it’s her first child. Choosing Denver apartments with their state of the art security features and cleanliness can help ease some of the fears for new mothers. Denver apartments can help check on thing off of a new mother’s list of worries. She can then prepare her new Denver apartments for the baby.

This is one of the reasons why some women (especially young ones) sometimes kill their newborn children. And the understanding of this is why the law is often forgiving.

There are a lot of considerations a woman needs to make when she becomes pregnant. Since her body was open to conceiving, it obviously believed that the situation was secure enough to allow a child to come about. And when a child survives its first trimester, a lot of the danger is thankfully past. But that doesn’t mean the mother or the child is out of the woods yet. Once a woman gives birth to the baby, she obviously has to take care of it for a long time. And as much as it might break her heart to let it go, sometimes this is the most merciful thing for both of them.

Many people believe that considerations such as money are not so important. Keep in mind that it is fairly easy to forget the importance of something which exists in abundance. When a woman isn’t sure where her next meal may come from, how well can she feed her child? In some cases, giving birth to the baby leads to a terror that mother and child may die for lack of resources. In these sorts of situations, a woman who ends her child’s life is not a murderer—she is just trying to survive.

Americans are the biggest pill poppers in the world. It’s just so much easier to pop a couple Ibuprofen than to lay down for a few minutes with a warm moist cloth on your forehead. Doctors do not always know it all and doctors are expensive. There are many alternative options to caring for one’s health. However, going alternative must be guided by professional knowledge. Some doctors are beginning to see the advantages of alternative means of treatment. If you are interested in this path, seek out the doctors who are willing to work with you in engaging in alternative options if they work better than drugs.
